Copying, Sharing and The Hyper-Viral Dream of Social Media
Want to lease space in your client’s minds, by leveraging the time they spend on the web?
Then it’s time to wake up.
To continue from our last discussion on this topic, the thing to wake up from is this dream of hyper-viral-marketing through the combination of blogs and social media.
Most people never will never be on the front page of DIgg. Most people don’t need to be on the front page of Digg, despite the links and traffic it can generate. Most popular sites have never been, and aren’t actively seeking that as a strategy.

The Beast is Hungry and Bored: What’s Happening After Social Media?

So today, I woke up particularly refreshed and jazzed about a workshop I want to give.
I asked people what they wanted, and they said a series of hands on lessons that will teach them how to use new media tools more effectively, and teach those of them who don’t know how to use them, where to start, and how to fit it into 15 — 30 minutes a day.
Then I realized how absolutely bored I was with answering the same questions about blogging and social media that I was 5 years ago.

Why Do People Use Online Social Networking?
Because it works.
Next question.
Okay, kidding. Not about the part where I said that it works, though. It does work. Social networking gives all the people who use it, for all their different reasons, what they want.
Some people want to be able to stay informed, whether it’s from dialogue with friends or updates about their favorite sites, news, or interests online.
Other people want to learn more about the people they’re going to meet offline, by meeting them in the online world first. It’s a heck of a way to get closer to people you admire, if only for a few minutes, and often facilitates the chance to meet them in person.
For everyone, it’s the same reason we network offline. People are social creatures.

How Do You Use Social Networking Sites for Business?
There are two schools of thoughts on this.
One is more of a hard core, in-your-face, almost used-car-salesman-y method. Some say using the first method goes directly against the spirit f why social networking sites were created.
The second school of thought is more of a long-view, careful approach. Some say that it’s too touchy-feely and not profit-oriented.
The truth is you have to look at your market, look at each method, and decide which one is right for you and your business. I find the second one much more profitable and effective, but then, my audience is fellow business owners, who already have thriving businesses and want a solution.
If your audience is the “get rich quick” or “lose weight now” crowd, you probably want to go with the first method.
